Blast Furnace Money Making Guide
The Blast Furnace is one of the most reliable and consistent money makers in Old School RuneScape. By smelting bars with half the normal coal requirement, you can turn a solid profit while also training Smithing. This guide covers everything you need to know to maximize your GP/hr at the Blast Furnace.
What is the Blast Furnace?
The Blast Furnace is a members-only minigame located in Keldagrim, the dwarven city beneath the mountains east of Rellekka. It is a special furnace that allows you to smelt metal bars using half the coal normally required. This dramatically reduces the cost of smelting bars, making it profitable to smelt bars that would otherwise break even or lose money at a regular furnace.
For example, a steel bar normally requires 1 iron ore and 2 coal. At the Blast Furnace, it only requires 1 iron ore and 1 coal. A runite bar normally requires 1 runite ore and 8 coal, but at the Blast Furnace it only needs 1 runite ore and 4 coal. This coal savings is what makes the Blast Furnace so profitable.
The minigame runs on dedicated Blast Furnace worlds where other players (or NPCs on specified worlds) operate the machinery. You just need to load ores onto the conveyor belt and collect your finished bars from the bar dispenser.
Requirements
To use the Blast Furnace effectively, you need:
- 60 Smithing — Below level 60, you must pay a fee of 2,500 GP every 10 minutes to the foreman. At 60+, you can use the Blast Furnace for free.
- The Giant Dwarf quest — Required to access Keldagrim where the Blast Furnace is located.
- Coal bag — Purchased from the Motherlode Mine for 100 golden nuggets. This is essential for efficiency as it lets you carry an extra 27 coal (or 36 with the Smithing cape).
- Ice gloves — Obtained by killing the Ice Queen beneath White Wolf Mountain. Required to pick up hot bars from the dispenser without waiting for them to cool. Without ice gloves, you must pour water on the bars first, which wastes time.
- Stamina potions — You will be running constantly between the bank, conveyor belt, and bar dispenser. Stamina potions keep your run energy up. Budget 3-4 doses per hour.
Recommended Gear
Wear weight-reducing gear to conserve run energy. The Graceful outfit is ideal. Equip ice gloves as your hand slot item. Bring a coal bag, a stack of coins (for the coffer), and stamina potions. The rest of your inventory should be empty for carrying ores.
Best Bars to Smelt
Profit per bar changes constantly based on Grand Exchange prices. Use our Blast Furnace Calculator for real-time profit calculations. Here is a general ranking of bars from most to least profitable:
Runite Bars (Best Profit per Bar)
Runite bars are typically the most profitable per bar but have the highest ore cost. You need 1 runite ore and 4 coal per bar (half of the normal 8 coal). The profit margin is usually 2,000-5,000 GP per bar. However, runite ore is expensive, so you need significant starting capital. Expect to smelt around 900-1,000 runite bars per hour.
Adamantite Bars (Great Balance)
Adamantite bars offer a great balance between profit per bar and ore cost. You need 1 adamantite ore and 3 coal. The profit margin is typically 1,000-2,500 GP per bar. You can smelt around 1,000-1,100 adamantite bars per hour, making this a solid choice for most players.
Mithril Bars (Lower Entry Cost)
Mithril bars require 1 mithril ore and 2 coal. The profit per bar is lower (usually 300-800 GP), but the ore cost is also lower, making this accessible for players with smaller cash stacks. You can smelt around 1,100-1,200 mithril bars per hour.
Steel Bars (Budget Option)
Steel bars require 1 iron ore and 1 coal. While the profit per bar is small (100-400 GP typically), the speed at which you can smelt them is the highest since you use the least coal. This can be a good option when other bar margins are thin.
GP/Hr Estimates
Your actual GP/hr depends on the bar you are smelting, current GE prices, and your efficiency. Here are typical estimates for experienced players with a coal bag and ice gloves:
- Runite bars: 800k-1.5m GP/hr
- Adamantite bars: 700k-1.2m GP/hr
- Mithril bars: 400k-800k GP/hr
- Steel bars: 200k-500k GP/hr
These numbers fluctuate daily. Always check the Blast Furnace Calculator before starting a session to pick the most profitable bar for current prices. Sometimes adamantite beats runite if runite ore prices are elevated.
Step-by-Step Guide
Follow these steps for an efficient Blast Furnace session:
- Step 1: Travel to Keldagrim. The fastest method is using the minigame teleport (once every 20 minutes) or the Keldagrim cart from the Grand Exchange.
- Step 2: Deposit coins into the coffer near the entrance. You need at least 72,000 GP per hour to pay the workers who operate the furnace machinery. Load extra to avoid running out mid-session.
- Step 3: Fill your coal bag with coal from the bank. Fill your inventory with the appropriate ores.
- Step 4: Run to the conveyor belt. Place your ores on the belt, then empty your coal bag onto the belt.
- Step 5: Run to the bar dispenser (south side). With ice gloves equipped, collect your finished bars.
- Step 6: Bank the bars and repeat. Use stamina potions as needed to maintain run energy.
With practice, each cycle takes about 60-90 seconds. The key to efficiency is minimizing the time between cycles and keeping a smooth rhythm. After a few trips, the process becomes second nature.
Tips for Maximum Profit
- Use official Blast Furnace worlds: Worlds 352, 355, 356, 357, 358, and 386 have dedicated Blast Furnace groups. Using these worlds means other players keep the machinery running, so you only need to focus on smelting.
- Coal bag is essential: Without a coal bag, your GP/hr drops significantly because you make fewer bars per trip. Getting the coal bag from Motherlode Mine should be your first priority.
- Buy ores in bulk: Buy your ores on the GE before starting your session. Buying in bulk lets you place patient buy offers and get slightly better prices. Check our Flip Finder for ore prices.
- Stamina potions save time: Running out of run energy means walking, which dramatically reduces your bars per hour. Always have stamina potions ready.
- Track your profits: Use our Profit Tracker to log your Blast Furnace sessions and track your actual GP/hr over time.
- Consider selling bars at peak times: Bar prices can fluctuate 2-5% throughout the day. Selling during peak hours (evening GMT) can boost your effective profit.
